I have been using my Canon R5 with a lightning trigger to capture some stunning lightning strikes.
However, I am not completely satisfied with the image quality of R5. Don’t get me wrong.
R5 is one of the best 35mm digital systems out there, but if you are spoiled by the image quality
of a digital back, it will be hard to look the other way. Unfortunately, at this moment,
there are no triggers work with my Phase One IQ 4150.
I was chasing thunderstorms in the southwest of USA. When I saw this epic scene - the Grand Canyon,
the awesome rainbow, the beautiful afternoon light, the non-stopping lightning bolts, and the storm –
I knew that I had to “get the shot” in the highest quality. I need a new and unconventional way
to make this image. I set up a medium format system (Alpa 12 STC Camera, Phase One IQ4150 Digital Back,
Rhodenstock HR 50mm Lens) and a 35mm system (Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM)
side by side, on two tripods, pointing to the same location. A Kase Armour CPL filter and a 6-stop ND filter,
as well as a Lightning Trigger was used on the Canon system. The Phase One system was used to
capture the ground (two images stitched together). The Canon system recorded the sky and the
lightning actions. I then combined the sky from the Canon (need to resize it to match the
Phase One image, of course) and the ground from the Phase One system to make this image.
The lightning portion was a result of stacking several images to show more than one lightning strikes.

I was leading a tour in the southwest, and our group were shooting some fantastic ground cracks this morning.
When I saw a storm was approaching, and we jumped into action. I need a HR23mm lens to get the wide-angle shot,
but I left it in my truck! I only had an HR 32mm lens with me. Well, when you stitch two vertical images (using the shift movement) of HR 32,
you will get almost the exact same view of HR 23mm, with more megapixels of course!

A Sudden Glory , Death Valley National Park, USA
Over the last decade, I have been trying to capture an image from this spot many times,
but I never had one that I am completely satisfied with. On this day, the weather
forecast app showed a very promising outlook. However, at the sunset time,
dark clouds filled the western sky. Then, all the sudden, the sky exploded.
The best show lasted less than a minute and I was only able to snap three images.
However, it could not be any better!

The Perfect Storm , Toroweap Point, Grand Canyon National Park, USA
At the sunset time, in the most remote section of the Grand Canyon,
I stood on the edge of the cliff, waiting for the incredibly powerful summer storm moving towards me.
Everything came together perfectly. Everything was how it should be - the most stunning view of the entire Grand Canyon,
the perfect cumulonimbus cloud formation, the beautiful rainbow, the powerful microburst downpour,
the best golden light, and most importantly, the storm was moving towards me and strong wind was blowing
towards me (pushing me away from the edge of the cliff), so I could safely capture it up close while staying dry.
A few minutes after capturing this image, hail, rain, powerful wind, sand and stones blown up by the wind in the air,
and non-stopping lightning strikes arrived. I had to run for my life. It was an experience that I would never forget.

The fascinating mud cracks form a leading line toward the jagged blue mesa.
The huge Dixie fire of 2021 in California filled the sky of the entire western USA with smoke for many weeks.
I was extremely disappointed when I was trying to shoot Mr. Rainier and the Glacier National Park,
as I could hardly see the maintains. However, all was not lost. During my storm-chasing trip in the southwest,
I was treated with beautiful light beams during almost every sunrise and sunset, thanks to the smokes in the sky.

This is one of the most remote locations in the US southwest. We drove on the famous Elephant Hill trail,
one of the most technically challenged 4x4 road in the US, for hours before reaching this location.

A Window on a Lost World , New Mexico, USA
This is an old image that I took a few years ago but it never got processed.
The “window” in the foreground is very small (just about 2 feet high I believe).
I visited the area again last month and noticed that the formation was broken -
an inevitable result due to erosion. When I got home, I searched my image collection and processed it.
The depth of fields of medium format systems are very shallow when shooting up close,
so I had to shoot five frames at different focal distances and manually DOF blended them together
(auto-blending never worked for me). The process was very time-consuming. I like the result, though.

The Garden of the Gods , the Needles District, Canyonlands National Park, Utah
In this April morning, in the remote Needles district, Canyonlands National Park, a storm cloud passed overhead.
Suddenly it started raining and I scrambled to cover my camara gear, but I did not leave. Minutes later,
I was treated with an amazing show of light and clouds above these incredible rock spirals.
This is one of the most remote locations in the US southwest. We drove on the famous Elephant Hill trail,
one of the most technically challenged 4x4 road in the US, for hours before reaching this location.

It is a land like no other place on earth; a land full of colors,

you have to see the park from the air. You will see the Colorado River
winds through the vast wilderness of Colorado Plateau, cutting through layered,
