"Magic Awakened", Isle of Skye, Scotland
You've likely never seen the iconic Old Man of Storr from this perspective. Achieving this composition was a remarkably challenging feat. Envision the complexity of executing focus stacking, exposure blending, and wide-angle panorama stitching concurrently, all orchestrated without the aid of a viewfinder.

There wasn't actually a cave at this location. To craft this visual illusion, I wedged my camera against the cliff with just a slight overhang overhead, leaving absolutely no space between myself and the equipment. The dual-axis tilting LCD monitor of the GFX 100 II was pivotal in orchestrating this scene. Even so, my presence in front of the lens necessitated the use of a shutter delay. After setting the metering, focus, and triggering the shutter, I dashed out of the frame only to dash back and repeat the process. It was a comical yet strenuous exercise atop a rocky terrain. Nonetheless, the end result is as singular as it is spectacular, and unequivocally worth the exertion.

Along a rushing creek,the bushes and grass were covered in sparkling hoarfrost, while the entire landscape burst into a vibrant display of the most stunning fall colors I had ever seen. In all my years visiting Patagonia, I had never before encountered such a breathtaking spectacle of nature's beauty.

Seracs are stunning natural formations of glacial ice, composed of massive blocks or jagged pinnacles that result from the intersection of deep crevasses on a glacier. These imposing and dangerous structures are both impressive and beautiful to behold. Under the warm glow of the afternoon sun, these ice spires on an extremely remote glacier between massive peaks are transformed into towering, ethereal blue pillars, some of them appear translucent in the radiant light, It was a truly awe-inspiring spectacle that is rarely seen by anyone.

"Grand Finale", Grand Canyon National Park, USA
I have been using my Canon R5 with a lightning trigger to capture some stunning lightning strikes. However, I am not completely satisfied with the image quality of R5. Don’t get me wrong. R5 is one of the best 35mm digital systems out there, but if you are spoiled by the image quality of a digital back, it will be hard to look the other way. Unfortunately, at this moment, there are no triggers work with my Phase One IQ 4150.

I was chasing thunderstorms in the southwest of USA. When I saw this epic scene - the Grand Canyon, the awesome rainbow, the beautiful afternoon light, the non-stopping lightning bolts, and the storm - I knew that I had to “get the shot” in the highest quality. I need a new and unconventional way to make this image. I set up a medium format system (Alpa 12 STC Camera, Phase One IQ4150 Digital Back, Rhodenstock HR 50mm Lens) and a 35mm system (Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM) side by side, on two tripods, pointing to the same location. A Kase Armour CPL filter and a 6-stop ND filter, as well as a Lightning Trigger was used on the Canon system. The Phase One system was used to capture the ground (two images stitched together). The Canon system recorded the sky and the lightning actions. I then combined the sky from the Canon (need to resize it to match the Phase One image, of course) and the ground from the Phase One system to make this image. The lightning portion was a result of stacking several images to show more than one lightning strikes.

Behold this remarkable sea stack along the coast of Spain, with its intricate formation resembling that of a dragon, complete with eyes that pierce through the mist. A true marvel of nature and a sight that will leave you in awe.

For this stunning scene to come alive, everything must align perfectly. The month must be precise for the sun to rise in the correct position, enabling its golden rays to seep through the sea stack. The tide's height must be exact, just enough to stimulate wave action in the foreground - a foot higher would make it unsafe to approach; a foot lower and the waves cease to be. Additionally, a faint mist must be present to scatter sunlight into brilliant, radiant beams. This breathtaking spectacle only truly unfolds when these elements harmoniously coincide.

Suddenly, my wish came true - the sun pierced through the clouds, casting a beam of light over Fitz Roy and creating a stunning rainbow in the sky. It was an epic scene, one of the greatest I had ever witnessed. I told everyone in my group to mount a CPL filter in front the lens, as a polarizer can make the colors of the rainbow more intense and much brighter when it been rotated at certain angle.

"The Perfect Storm", Toroweap Point, Grand Canyon National Park, USA

At the sunset time, in the most remote section of the Grand Canyon, I stood on the edge of the cliff, waiting for the incredibly powerful summer storm moving towards me. Everything came together perfectly. Everything was how it should be - the most stunning view of the entire Grand Canyon, the perfect cumulonimbus cloud formation, the beautiful rainbow, the powerful microburst downpour, the best golden light, and most importantly, the storm was moving towards me and strong wind was blowing towards me (pushing me away from the edge of the cliff), so I could safely capture it up close while staying dry.

A few minutes after capturing this image, hail, rain, powerful wind, sand and stones blown up by the wind in the air, and non-stopping lightning strikes arrived. I had to run for my life. It was an experience that I would never forget.

For a few seconds, some faraway peaks appeared in a window in the sea of fog and mist. I clicked the shutter a few times and my digital back reported the memory card was full. I thought that I missed this incredible scenery forever, but it turned out that I did capture it!

"Frozen in Time", Boundary Ranges, Alaska
Like most people, I was forced to stay home during this unprecedented time. I finally got some time to process some very old images. This one was captured about 5 years ago when my friend Marc Adamus and I were exploring Alaska mountain ranges. We two were probably the first photographers ever set foot on this area. This epic scenery was the first image captured from the ground during that exploration. It was shoot just 10 meters (30 feet) from my tent, after the helicopter dropped us on this mountain top and we set up our tents.

"Reflection Canyon at Night", Reflection Canyon, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area,Utah
The full arc of the Milky Way raises over the incredible Reflection Canyon. In order to reach this very remote canyon, I drove a speedboat across the vast Lake Powell, parked the boat near the bottom of a cliff, climbed the cliff, and camped near the edge of the canyon. It was such an unreal experience. The image was a stitch of tens of high-res photos taken with a medium format system with a 100 million-pixel PhaseOne digital back, mounted on a star-tracking device. The final image contains a mind-blowing number of 600 million pixels. The result huge, 6X9 meter starscape print was one of the biggest landscape images, if not the biggest, ever printed and installed. Here is link to a video of the installation and exhibition.

The glory of the spectacular dawn was a perfect match for one of the most beautiful and mystical geysers in the world. Created accidentally by well drilling many years ago, the Fly Geyser gradually grows to its current size and shape because of the deposition of minerals from the hot geothermal water. The brilliant colors of green and red are primarily due to thermophilic algae, which flourishes in moist, hot environments. Very few people are lucky enough to see this extraordinary wonder with their own eyes. Capturing her legendary beauty under such a splendid sky was really a once-in-a-life time experience.

A very chilly morning (-30C) at Banff National Park, Canada. It was quite challenging to shoot this image with a technical camera, since at such a low temperature, it was very difficult to adjust the focus ring or do any adjustment.

Mysterious auroras swirl the midnight sky of this extremely remote mountain ranges near the Arctic circle.

Technique Notes: This is a very complicated shot consists of 16 exposures. Fourteen consecutive frames using ISO 6300/f2.8/30-sec were used for focus-stacking and multi-frame-average-noise-reduction to get a high-quality, sharp foreground image under such difficult dark conditions. The reflection was captured using ISO 12800/f2.8/8 seconds. The aurora itself was recorded by tilting the lens to include more sky, using ISO 12800/f2.8/1-sec. The reflections, foreground, and the sky were stitched together to get the final image. The aurora was moving so fast that a slower shutter speed would have blurred its magical shape.

"Day Dreaming", Proxy Falls, Three Sisters Wilderness, Oregon, USA
Soft and warm light from the setting Sun dapples the most spectacular waterfall of Oregon, creating splendid rainbows. I had to navigate the slippery and dangerous rocks, falling tree trucks and cold, rapid water, while fighting the spray of water, in order to chase the elusive rainbows and light patterns. Moving the camera position by mere one foot and the rainbow might disappear. The light conditions changed minute-by-minute. Each image captured was distinct and unique.

"The Spell of Rising Moon", Yukon Territory, Canada
The moon rose after midnight over the Tombstone range. The aurora borealis show was so strong that it drowned in bright moonlight on the sky.

Technique Notes: This is a very complicated shot. Seven frames using 14mm/ISO 1600/f2.8/30-sec, captured consecutively within a few minutes, were used for focus-stacking so the resulting image is tack-sharp from near to far. The aurora was relatively static on the sky so I could use a slow (30 seconds) shutter speed to capture more light.

"Light at the End", The Subway, Zion National Park, Utah
The trek to the famed Subway tunnel is already a challenging endeavor under normal circumstances, typically necessitating 6-8 hours of strenuous hiking while carrying a heavy camera bag and a tripod on one's back. However, during winter, it becomes increasingly difficult and perilous as one must navigate steep, ice-laden mountain trails. On that bitterly cold day, I found myself as the sole human presence in that remote area. At the time, I didn't yet possess an InReach satellite messaging device, which meant that any injury could have potentially been fatal, given my inability to call for assistance.

By diligently tracking the weather and seizing the opportunity to visit Zion following a spell of unseasonably cold temperatures, I was rewarded with a captivating and singular view. The extraordinary and visually striking ice columns that adorn the canyon walls were such a rare sight.
